WrestleMania 34 Recap and Review

source: WWE

It's finally here: WrestleMania 34! Check out what went down on one of the most stacked WrestleMania cards ever.

Pre-Show

source: WWE

Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

Winner: Matt Hardy

Highlights:

  • The lights go out, and Bray Wyatt appears in the ring

  • Wyatt assists Hardy in eliminating

Opinion:

It would have been cool to see some NXT guys in this match instead of people who haven't been on TV in four months. I’m glad Brother Bray has made an appearance at WrestleMania, and I hope that he stays involved in Matt’s “Woken Universe”. Matt Hardy deserves this victory, and there really weren’t many who deserved it other than him. Hopefully, this win will help further his Woken agenda and give the Great War some more TV time.

Mustafa Ali vs. Cedric Alexander

WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match

Winner: Cedric Alexander

Highlights:

  • Ali climbs to the top rope and grabs Alexander, delivering a Spanish fly

  • Mustafa goes for the 054, but Cedric sweeps his legs and knocks him to the ground outside the ring

  • Ali reverses the Lumbar Check into a reverse Rana and a tornado DDT

  • Mustafa Ali hits an 054, but Alexander puts his foot on the bottom rope, breaking the pin

  • Alexander barely dodges a second 054, hitting him with three backward elbows

  • Cedric Alexander hits the Lumbar Check, getting the three count

  • Alexander embraces Ali immediately following the pin, thanking him and showing everyone that their friendship has not been harmed by this match.

Opinion:

It’s unfortunate that this match was on the preshow. Keeping this off the main card also keeps some of the excitement and hype off this match. This match was fantastic, and the amount of storytelling that these two can do with one another is definitely deserving of main card time.

source: WWE

WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal

Winner: Naomi

Highlights:

  • The women from NXT briefly take over and get an NXT chant started

  • Kairi Sane delivers an elbow to Ruby Riott

  • Sarah Logan and Ruby Riott pick up Liv MOrgan, who kicks Tynara Conti out

  • Bianca Belair whacks Becky with her hair

  • Sasha tries to have a truce with Bayley, but Bayley eliminates her

  • Bayley turns around and sees Naomi, who wasn’t eliminated over the top rope

  • Naomi eliminates Bayley to win the battle royal

Opinion:

I’m glad Naomi won in this way. She deserves this opportunity to make history, and she’s one of the most athletic superstars on the roster. We also got some more storytelling between Sasha and Bayley. As soon as Bayley eliminated Sasha, fans were ecstatic. Sasha offered a truce, but Bayley finally knew not to fall for it. That was a huge step for Bayley’s innocent character, and I cant wait for the rivalry to continue.

Main Card

The Miz vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor

Intercontinental Championship Match

Winner: Seth Rollins

Highlights:

  • Balor jumps over the top rope and onto Miz and Rollins

  • Rollins delivers a double blockbuster to Balor and Miz

  • Seth delivers a suicide dive to Finn on one side and runs across the ring and gives a suicide dive to Miz

  • Rollins breaks up Miz’s figure four on Balor with a frog splash

  • Balor kicks Rollins and Miz into the barricade

  • Miz hits Rollins with a Skull-Crushing Finale, but Rollins kicks out

  • Balor breaks up a pin by hitting both men with a Coup De Grace

  • Rollins breaks up Balor’s pin on Miz with a stomp

  • Seth stomps Miz and gets the victory

Opinion:

I’m glad that the title is being taken off Miz so close to him breaking a record. Now he can come back with a vengeance in a couple months or so, after he takes time off to be with his kid or something.

I didn’t realize that a victory here would make Rollins a Grand Slam Champion, and now that I know that I’m glad he won. The title in the hands of any of these guys is gonna be entertaining, and I can’t wait to see what Rollins does next.

Charlotte vs. Asuka

Smackdown Women’s Championship Match

Winner: Charlotte

Highlights:

  • Asuka uses a hip attack to send Charlotte off the apron and into the barricade

  • Charlotte hits Asuka with a backpack stunner

  • Asuka catches Charlotte’s moonsault, trapping her in the Asuka lock

  • Asuka suplexes Charlotte off the apron to the outside

  • Charlotte delivers a Spanish fly to Asuka off the top rope

  • Charlotte brutally spears Asuka

  • Asuka taps to a figure eight submission

  • After the match, Asuka gets a mic and says that Charlotte was ready for her

  • Charlotte hugs Asuka

  • As Charlotte walks out, a referee comes to talk to John Cena and Cena takes off, running up the ramp and backstage

Opinion:

If anyone would be able to break Asuka’s streak, it would be Charlotte. I am a little disappointed that they didn’t capitalize on the opportunity to get major heat by having Carmella break the streak, but this match was still very good. I like how we got to see them embrace, too.

Watching John Cena bolt up the ramp was hilarious and I like how they wove together segments between the men and women—it gets people more excited for other matches to come.

Rusev vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton vs. Bobby Roode

United States Championship Match

Winner: Jinder Mahal

Highlights:

  • Orton superplexes Bobby Roode off the top rope

  • Randy delivers RKOs to Aiden English, Rusev, and Mahal

  • Sunil Singh distracts Rusev, and Rusev kicks Singh instead of Jinder

  • Jinder hits Rusev with the Khallas for the victory

Opinion:

I’m confused. I know I’m not the only one who predicted that anyone else besides Mahal would win this match. I don’t really see the point of this and I don’t know where they’re gonna go with. Jinder is probably the second least entertaining person in that match right now (in front of Orton) and I feel like there were 100 other possibilities before this one. Maybe the goal was just to throw the fans for a loop.

Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon

Winners: Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey

Highlights:

  • Before the match, Stephanie yanks Ronda down by her ponytail

  • While the ref is distracted, Stephanie sends Angle face first into the steel steps

  • Ronda tries to lock in an arm bar, but McMahon sticks her thumb in her eye to get out of it

  • Triple H stops a cover by pulling a ref out of the ring

  • Ronda and Triple H argue, and he sweeps her legs and pulls her out of the ring, her face hitting the floor

  • Rousey unloads on Triple H and picks him up, but Stephanie pulls him off and slaps Rousey

  • Stephanie sends Ronda face first off the post

  • Kurt hits Triple H with several suplexes and an Angle slam

  • Rousey reverses a pedigree via hurricanrana

  • Angle captures Triple H in an Angle lock and Rousey traps Steph in an armbar, but Triple H rolls through and sends Kurt into Ronda

  • Stephanie taps out as soon as Ronda locks in the arm bar

Opinion:

I think Ronda Rousey was very impressive in her debut. No one looked weak, and Stephanie’s antics got you so excited for Ronda to inflict as much pain on her as possible. Ronda put on a really good show, and I thought it was really cool to see her do well.

New Day vs. Bludgeon Brothers vs. Usos

Winners: Bludgeon Brothers

Highlights:

  • Kofi tries to get an early pin, but Harper and Rowan pull him out of the ring

  • Bludgeon Brothers decimate Kofi, E, Jimmy, and Woods

  • Jimmy and Jey double team Harper and suplex Rowan

  • Harper and Rowan double powerbomb Kofi Kingston for the victory

Opinion:

While the Usos and New Day deserve the title more, it’s time to elevate a new team on Smackdown Live. It’s clear that Harper and Rowan can be the dominant tag team that can take Smackdown by storm. I am surprised that this match seemed shorter than these three teams other encounters with one another, though.

source: WWE

John Cena vs. the Undertaker

Winner: Undertaker

Highlights:

  • John Cena comes out to the ring, but when the ref tells him some bad news, he starts to leave

  • The lights go out and Elias’ guitar plays

  • John Cena goes back out to sit in the crowd

  • Elias sings and talks about how Cena sucks, so Cena comes into the ring and attacks him

  • Cena stands there, and when his music hits, he gets disappointed yet again and starts to leave when the lights go out again

  • Undertaker’s hat and jacket appear in the ring but then they disappear

  • The gong hits and Undertaker slowly makes his entrance

  • Cena aims for the Five Knuckle Shuffle, but when Taker sits, up, and Cena’s thrown off

  • Undertaker hits a chokeslam and a Tombstone Piledriver for the victory

Opinion:

I love the way this was done. After weeks of no response, Taker returns and completely squashes Cena. Undertaker looked amazing, and he probably could have lasted quite a bit longer in this match. I think this is a great way to end Taker’s career, if he wanted to do so. I was so confused when Elias came out and when John Cena finished him, and I think it was great how they waited until the last possible minute.

source: WWE

Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens

Winners: Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon

Highlights:

  • Sami and Kevin attack Daniel and Shane, sending Shane into the crowd right next to his kids

  • Sami deilvers a Helluva Kick to Bryan and KO gives him a popup powerbomb on the apron

  • Shane starts the match without Bryan while medics attend to him outside the ring

  • Bryan hits Sami with the Yes kicks and plants him with a running knee

  • Sami Zayn taps out to the Yes lock

  • Bryan leads a yes chant before going to the crowd and kissing Brie

Opinion:

I was a little worried after Sami and Kevin attacked Bryan so viscously at the beginning—as well as every time Bryan took a hit. It was kind of obvious Bryan and Shane were going to win, but it was still really fun to watch. Daniel Bryan’s new momentum is exciting, and Shane, Kevin, and Sami definitely didn’t disappoint either.

Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax

Raw Women's Championship Match

Winner: Nia Jax

Highlights:

  • Nia attacks Mickie James right before the match starts

  • Alexa stomps on Nia’s back

  • Bliss delivers a Twisted Bliss to Nia outside the ring

  • Alexa attempts a hurricanrana and is launched into the turnbuckle

  • Bliss jabs her fingers into Jax’s eyes repeatedly

  • Nia gives Alexa a Samoan Drop off the middle rope and gets the three count

Opinion:

I’m glad that Nia gets the payoff at WrestleMania. She finally got her revenge after being continuously bullied and attacked, and her message of confidence and self-love is able to be spread. It’s always good to see a new champ so overcome with emotions that they’re crying.

source: WWE

AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

WWE Championship Match

Winner: AJ Styles

Highlights:

  • AJ hits Shinsuke with a flying knee drop

  • Nakamura kicks Styles’ legs out from under him, sending him face first onto the apron

  • AJ gives Shinsuke a pumphandle gutbuster

  • Nakamura hits AJ with a low blow, kicking him out of the ring

  • Shinsukes delivers a Kinshasa to AJ outside the ring before leaving up the ramp

Opinion:

After a fantastic match, I did not expect that. Before he came to WWE, I hadn’t seen much from Shinsuke Nakamura. I’m not sure if he’s been a heel before, but his heel-ness has a new identity in WWE. I’m excited to either see this rivalry continue or to see Shinsuke start a new feud with a babyface. Nakamura’s charisma can take him anywhere, and with both Nakamura and AJ not being able to put on a bad match, the outlook looks good.

source: WWE

The Bar vs. Braun Strowman and Nicholas

Raw Tag Team Championship Match

Winners: Braun Strowman and Nicholas

Highlights:

  • Braun Strowman pushes the Bar’s Mardi Gras float off the stage

  • Strowman picks his partner out of the audience, and he chooses a little boy named Nicholas

  • Braun instructs Nicholas to stand on the apron while Sheamus and Cesaro get these hands

  • Strowman throws the Bar around, but eventually they team up on him

  • Cesaro stands on Sheamus’ shoulders and jumps onto Strowman

  • Strowman crossbodies both Cesaro and Sheamus

  • Braun tags in Nicholas, who looks terrified and tags Braun back in

  • Braun beats Cesaro with a running power slam

  • Strowman and Nicholas celebrate with the titles in the center of the ring

Opinion:

This was the funniest thing I have seen in a while. No one expected Braun to pick a fan, let alone a child. When Nicholas was tagged in, I was freaking out. I think we have a new superstar on our hands.

Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns

WWE Universal Championship Match

Winner: Brock Lesnar

Highlights:

  • Lesnar delivers 3 suplexes, and Roman gives him 3 superman punches in return

  • Reigns is thrown into the barricade by Lesnar

  • Reigns drives Lesnar onto and over the announce table

  • Roman gives Lesnar a superman punch and two spears

  • Brock counters a spear with a knee to the face and follows with three F5s

  • Lesnar delivers a fourth F5 through the announce table

  • Brock takes his gloves and busts Roman open with elbows and punches

  • Reigns reverses an F5 into two spears

  • Brock hits Roman with one more spear before getting the three count

Opinion:

Wait, what? After all of that, Roman loses? Seriously? I have tried so hard not to be so biased against Brock Lesnar, but I just hate him so much. I don’t know how he got away with being Universal Champion for so long after never competing for more than 15 minutes a month. I really thought that, after beating Roman up so badly in the past few weeks, he would finally fall and take the L. I guess he just doesn’t know how.

The match wasn’t even very entertaining. The only reason I watch Brock Lesnar matches is in hope that he’s gonna lose, and I am disappointed every time. I don’t think I will ever understand why people are so excited to see someone who does the same 3 moves and wins in 8 minute matches.
